Trump announces withdrawal from the World Health Organization

On Monday, January 20, 2025, On Monday, January 20, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization.

This action has drawn condemnation from professionals in public health. Public health specialists forecast that this will compromise the nation’s reputation as a global leader in health and make it more difficult to combat the next pandemic.

Trump was initially critical of the WHO, and in July 2020, as the Covid-19 outbreak expanded, his administration officially started to withdraw from the WHO. However, one of the first things that former President Joe Biden did after assuming office was to stop the United States from exiting the organization.

About eight hours after assuming office, Mr. Trump released an executive order outlining several reasons for the withdrawal, such as the W.H.O.’s “mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic” and its “failure to adopt urgently needed reforms.” He claimed that the agency argues that China pays less and wants “unfairly onerous payments” from the US.

The action was predicted as Mr. Trump has been attacking the World Health Organization since 2020, when he threatened to stop the United States from providing monetary support to the organization due to its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
