PUWU resolves to resist privatization of ECG by government

The government’s proposal to allow the private sector to administer the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been met with strong opposition from the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which has vowed to oppose any step regarding privatization.

Despite being a major stakeholder in issues pertaining to ECG, PUWU expressed dissatisfaction about the lack of consultation in a statement signed by General Secretary Timothy Nyame on January 24.

The union reiterated its dedication to protecting its members’ interests and maintaining state control of ECG, and also chastised the government for excluding workers from the decision-making process.

“Information available to PUWU of TUC indicates that the planned privatization of ECG by the government is being pursued, and a committee put in place by the Minister of Energy to prosecute the agenda,’’ the statement read.

“As indicated earlier and in our press statement to the media, we would like to assure our members of our resolve to resist any attempt by the government to privatize ECG.

The union’s strong position is a reflection of larger worries about how privatization would affect Ghanaians’ access to and affordability of energy, as well as workers’ rights and job security.

“Members are kindly requested to remain calm while we take appropriate steps to steps towards achieving our goal. All should be on standby for any further direction,’’ portions of the statement read.
