Hon. Alban Bagbin suspends four MPs over vetting saga

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has imposed a two-week suspension on four Members of Parliament after violent altercations occurred during a ministerial vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The suspended MPs include Frank Annoh-Dompreh (NPP, Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (NDC, South Dayi), Alhassan Tampuli (NPP, Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (NDC, Weija-Gbawe).

The altercation took place during the vetting of Health Minister-designate Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Foreign Affairs Minister-designate Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The Minority Caucus accused the Majority of breaching an agreement to vet only two nominees per day, which led to intense verbal exchanges.

The situation escalated into physical confrontations, resulting in damaged microphones, broken furniture, and an overturned vetting table.

A special parliamentary committee, led by Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah, has been tasked with investigating the incident and submitting a report within 10 days.

Speaker Bagbin has also instructed the Clerk of Parliament to file an official complaint with the Ghana Police Service for a criminal investigation into the actions of the MPs involved.

He further announced that public funds will not be used to repair the damaged parliamentary property, and any MP found responsible will be held financially liable for the repairs.
