Speaker Bagbin Recalls Parliament to Sit on December 16

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has officially announced that Parliament will reconvene on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. This session marks the seventh meeting of the fourth session of the Eighth Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. The venue for the meeting will be communicated in due course.

The notice, issued on December 2, is pursuant to Order 58 of the Standing Orders of Parliament. The session is expected to tackle urgent legislative matters following the December 7 general elections.

Earlier, Speaker Bagbin had postponed any recall of Parliament, citing the absence of a prepared agenda from the Business Committee. However, this decision has now been reversed as Ghana navigates critical legislative and governance issues.

Parliament’s reconvening comes amidst a recent Supreme Court ruling overturning Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. The court clarified that such decisions require legal grounds and can only take effect under specific conditions.

This development underscores the need for Parliament to address pressing national matters, especially after the electoral process has concluded.
