Ghana’s 2009 World Cup Heroes Belittle Return On Government Investment

Abeiku Quansah, a member of Ghana’s 2009 U-20 World Cup-winning team, is dissatisfied with the return on the government’s GHc10,000 investment in the squad.

Speaking with Glorious Sports Today, Quansah stated that despite the 15-year investment period, the return has decreased in value.

He explained that, while the initial fund in 2009 may have been utilised to purchase anything important, the current amount received, GHc77,000, falls far short of the promised benefits.

Quansah remarked that players had been assured that if their investment matured, they would be able to develop properties, but the current payout is insufficient to even buy land in Accra.

“The amount we received was significantly lower than what was promised. “You can’t even buy land in Accra with that money,” he explained.

Goalkeeper Daniel Agyei, another member of the winning team, expressed disappointment. Agyei asked President John Dramani Mahama, who was Vice President at the time of the investment, to intervene to fix the issue.

“It was the state that made this investment for us, and most of us don’t have the money to hire lawyers to challenge it,” she said.
