The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government left behind a robust and stable economy prior to handing over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to Mohammed Anim Adam, a former finance minister and ranking member of Parliament’s Finance Committee.
Despite the new administration’s efforts to depict it differently, he said, key economic indicators showed that the economy was doing well.
At a news conference held by the Minority Caucus on Thursday, March 13, 2025, Anim said that Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson had fabricated budgetary figures to paint a negative economic image.
“Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, the manipulation of the fiscal data notwithstanding, the strong health of the economy the NPP handed to the new NDC government continues to be vindicated by other economic indicators,” he alleged.
He pointed out that at the end of 2024, Ghana’s debt-to-GDP ratio of 61.8% stands to be a crucial sign of the nation’s financial condition. He said that this success was fueled by the preceding government’s adept negotiating and the execution of a sound debt plan.
“An economy with such strong revenue performance and expenditure management as we have seen from the data in the budget cannot produce the kind of elevated fiscal outturns the minister announced.
“They have erroneously churned out wrong data in a bid to tarnish the image of the NPP administration by including GH₵49.2 billion in expenditure claims without any basis,” he accused.
“Whether we like it or not, it is historic, and history indeed will be kind to the Nana Akufo-Addo government,” he added.
