I have appointed only 30 presidential staffers – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has denied reports that he has hired over 100 presidential staff members.

Mahama stated that he has only appointed 30 presidential workers thus far during the swearing-in ceremony of some of his ministerial and deputy ministerial appointees on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

He pointed out that this number is significantly lower than the more than 336 presidential staffers that were hired by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, to whom he pledged he would not get close by the end of his presidential term.

“The same commitment to composing a lean government has found expression in the appointments made at the presidency. So far, I’ve appointed 27 presidents to various roles and three persons as directors of important governmental initiatives, bringing the total number of political appointees so far to 30. The list of 30 is pending approval from the Council of State,” he alleged.

“At the last count, there were 336 political appointees at the presidency under the previous government. While we’re in the process of recruiting supporting staff to enable the full functioning of our presidency, the numbers will come nowhere near the army of people that were hired under the previous government,” he added.

He disclosed that the NDC’s commitment to a lean government is based on their strong conviction that the government must practice fiscal restraint by making sure that public resources are used effectively and responsibly and that it goes beyond simply cutting the number of ministerial appointees or the number of presidents.
