Clashes between military personnel safeguarding AngloGold Mines and local miners have left numerous people dead, many injured, and numerous houses vandalized in Obuasi.
While the exact trigger behind the confrontation remains a mystery, early accounts suggest that the galamseyers had forced their way into one of the company’s mining shafts and demanded accessibility to a license for their mining operations.
According to reports, guns were fired during the altercation, resulting in both deaths as well as damages.
The tragic incident that occurred on Saturday, 18th January, caused the death of about eight miners, with several others injured.
Videos taken from the scene show unsettling footage of people with various degrees of injuries and some who were seen dead. The video also reveals damaged facilities and wrecked AngloGold Obuasi Mine vehicles.
