The social media platform TikTok officially went inactive in the US a few hours prior to the new legislation was set to go into effect.
“You can’t use TikTok for now” due to a law that has been passed, according to a notification that appears on the app for US users.
The app had been disabled due to suspicions of having ties to the Chinese government, and it was allowed until January 19th to be sold to a US buyer who had been approved.
President Joe Biden pointed out that he would let Donald Trump handle the matter. Trump announced that once he assumes office on Monday, he will probably grant TikTok a 90-day reprieve from a ban.
“The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done, because it’s appropriate. If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,’’ Donald Trump hinted in an interview with NDC News on Saturday.
TikTok users complained that videos were not appearing on TikTok.com and that the app had been deleted from the US app stores of Google and Apple.
The message that was shown following the ban’s implementation read, “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office.’’
