A flagrant attack on parliamentary dignity -Minority reacts to verbal attack on Annoh-Dompreh

The minority in Parliament has condemned the actions of Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, towards Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, calling it a blatant and outrageous assault.

They described the incident between the two as an attack on the leadership of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, adding that her actions also undermine the honor of Parliament.

“The Minority Caucus unequivocally condemns the reprehensible and contemptuous conduct exhibited by Ms. Victoria Emeafa Hardcastle, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Commission, against the Leadership of Parliament. Her behavior on Tuesday, 28th January 2025, represents one of the most flagrant attacks on parliamentary dignity in recent memory and demands an appropriately stern response from the House,” which was signed by the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin read.

“Ms. Hardcastle’s attempt to direct the minority chief whip. Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, on the execution of his parliamentary duties, coupled with her unconscionable description of senior Member of Parliament as ‘silly,’ constitutes an egregious assault on parliamentary authority that cannot go unchallenged. Such conduct strikes at the very foundation of our democracy and must be met with the full force of parliamentary sanctions,’’ the statement added.

The statement pointed out that Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to personally address the issue and get to the bottom of it demonstrates the seriousness of the situation. His direct involvement signals the significance of the matter and the need to protect the integrity of Parliament.

As a result, they are urging the Speaker of Parliament to implement the appropriate sanctions outlined in the Standing Orders of Parliament that correspond to the seriousness of Victoria’s actions.

The statement hinted, “We expect that the appropriate sanctions under our Standing Orders, including fines, imprisonment, restriction from parliamentary precincts, and a mandatory public apology, will be applied with appropriate severity to the offense.’’
