The NPP is leveraging the Appointments Committee to settle political scores – Fiifi Kwetey

Fiifi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for transforming the Appointments Committee of Parliament into a platform for political retribution, instead of using it to assess the qualifications of nominees.

In a discussion on TV3’s NewDay program on Monday, February 19, 2025, he expressed that the NPP is using the committee as a tool for personal vendettas, targeting individuals who played key roles in the previous elections. Kwetey argued that such actions do not serve the nation’s best interests.

“Our counterparts in the NPP need to understand that reviving their fortunes does not involve reducing the Appointments Committee to an arena for settling scores. They view this as an opportunity to use the committee to go after people they believe were influential in making their political situation difficult ahead of the election,” he claimed.

He recalled his own experience in 2009 when he was nominated as deputy finance minister, stating that the NPP deliberately attempted to block his approval due to his prominent role as a key spokesperson for the NDC during that election campaign.

“This is a pattern the NPP unfortunately follows. When they lose elections, they get angry and target those they believe were strong during that election. It is rarely about a nominee’s ability to perform but about past political statements and allegiances,” he added.
