StarTimes, has reportedly finalising an agreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to take over live broadcasting of the
Ghana Premier League (GPL) during the second round of the 2024/25 season.
The deal follows weeks of negotiations between StarTimes and the GFA, marking the company’s return to Ghanaian football after losing the rights last year due to unresolved financial issues with the football governing body.
StarTimes initially secured the GPL broadcast rights in 2016 under a ten-year agreement valued at $17.9 million. However, complications in the partnership led to a suspension of its coverage.
StarTimes previously held the broadcast rights for the league but ceased airing matches due to outstanding debts nearing $1 million. However, in an interview with Asempa FM, Sarfo Oduro revealed that negotiations with the pay-TV giant are almost complete.
Since the switch to free-to-air broadcasters, the quality of the GPL’s broadcast coverage has faced widespread criticism, with many fans expressing dissatisfaction with the standards during the opening matchday.
