King Promise has lost touch with the Ghanaian audience – MC Portfolio

As the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) approaches, entertainment analyst MC Portfolio has shared his thoughts on the virtues and shortcomings of two top nominees for Artiste of the Year: King Promise and King Paluta.

In an interview with ZionFelix, MC Portfolio praised King Promise for his commitment to pushing Ghanaian music to new heights, citing his sold-out shows in Asia and Europe.

“He’s breaking barriers and taking our sound where it’s never been before,” MC Portfolio said.

However, the entertainment expert noted that King Promise seemed to have lost touch with local audiences, particularly in certain areas of the Ghanaian population.

“King Promise’s problem is that he has lost touch with the Ghanaian people. So he might not be their favourite for the year in review. I am not saying he was never their favourite, but he is now Ghana’s crossover artist. He’s pushing Ghanaian music to places it hasn’t been before.

He went on, “But within Ghana, it’s more difficult for him. His marketability outside of Accra is problematic.’’

Although King Promise sells out gigs throughout the world, MC Portfolio notes that many Ghanaians are unfamiliar with him.

“He is the musician of the year and an advocate for Ghanaian music. He’s exporting our audio. But do his own people recognize him as someone who has influenced us?” he enquired.

“That’s why people prefer King Paluta. He has considerable clout among the Ghanaian population. Even if he travels to rural locations, people will turn out in droves to support him,’’ he stated.
