Barker-Vormawor called by Appointment Committee over bribery allegations

Oliver Barker-Vormawor, an activist, has been summoned by the Parliamentary Appointment Committee in light of bribery allegations directed at specific committee members.

The allegations, which have sparked significant controversy, were made ahead of the vetting session for Dr. Omane Boamah, the nominee for defence minister, scheduled for Tuesday, January 28.

Bernard Ahiafor, the first deputy speaker of parliament and chairman of The Appointments Committee, strongly refuted the allegations, asserting that they were unfounded and harmful to the integrity of the legislative screening process.

Consequently, Mr. Ahiafor instructed the committee’s clerk to officially request that Barker-Vormawor appear before the committee on Wednesday, January 29, to provide evidence supporting his claims.

“I, Bernard Ahiafor, Chairman of the Committee and 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, along with the committee members, categorically deny that we require any monetary contributions from nominees prior to their vetting,” he stated.

“I will consequently request the clerk of the Committee to summon Oliver Barker Vormawor to appear before the committee to present evidence regarding the allegations.”

Barker-Vormawor, recognized for his outspoken criticism of public leaders and government organizations, has yet to respond to the summons.

The allegations suggest that before their vetting sessions, members of the Appointments Committee require financial incentives or other forms of gratification from nominees.
